A devastating incident unfolded on Saturday at a political rally in southern India, leaving dozens dead and over 40 injured. The tragedy occurred when a massive surge of thousands of attendees pushed towards the stage where a celebrated actor and burgeoning politician was addressing the crowd.
The fatal crush claimed the lives of at least 36 individuals, with an additional 45 people requiring hospitalization in Karur, a city located in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu. State Chief Minister M.K. Stalin confirmed the grim statistics on social media, noting that among the deceased were eight children. Local news outlets were informed by Health Minister Ma Subramanian that the number of fatalities is regrettably expected to climb.
The event featured Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, globally recognized by his professional name, Vijay. He was speaking from a makeshift stage, innovatively constructed atop a bus, when the stampede tragically erupted.
At 51 years old, Mr. Chandrasekhar stands as one of Tamil Nadu’s most accomplished actors, having headlined numerous blockbuster films. His transition into politics began in 2024 when he stepped away from his prolific acting career to establish his own political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Disturbing videos circulated on social media captured the actor halting his speech as ambulances struggled to navigate through the dense crowd. He could be seen urgently appealing to his supporters to clear a path for emergency vehicles.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, describing the incident as ‘deeply saddening’ in a public message. Chief Minister Stalin also issued a statement, calling for public cooperation with medical personnel and law enforcement.
In his own message, Mr. Chandrasekhar conveyed his profound grief, stating, ‘My heart is shattered. The sorrow I am feeling is indescribable.’
He concluded by offering condolences and expressing his earnest hopes for the swift recovery of all those who were injured.
