Tony Blair in Talks to Lead Gaza’s Transitional Authority

September 26, 2025

Reading Time: 3 min

Sir Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has been involved in significant high-level discussions regarding the potential leadership of a transitional authority for Gaza. These talks, which include representatives from the US, the UN, and Gulf nations, aim to establish a governing body for the region following the current conflict, with the ultimate goal of transferring control back to Palestinian hands.

The proposal, reportedly supported by the White House, envisions Blair leading a transitional authority that would operate under a UN mandate. This body would be modelled on previous international administrations, such as those in East Timor and Kosovo, and is intended to provide stability for Gaza over a period of approximately five years. Initial operations are expected to be based in Egypt, near Gaza’s border, before an eventual entry into the territory alongside a multinational peacekeeping force.

Blair’s office has stated that he would not endorse any plan that involves the displacement of Gaza’s population. This stance comes amid various proposals for Gaza’s future, including those previously floated by Donald Trump and international peace initiatives by Arab nations and France.

The former Prime Minister’s past involvement in international affairs, including his role as Middle East envoy for the Quartet (US, EU, Russia, UN) after leaving office in 2007, highlights his experience in the region. During his tenure as envoy, he focused on economic development in Palestine and the promotion of a two-state solution.

These developments follow recent acknowledgements by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of his readiness to collaborate with global leaders on a two-state peace plan, while also expressing opposition to Hamas’s future role in Gaza and calling for their disarmament.

The international community continues to navigate complex proposals for Gaza’s reconstruction and governance, with varying degrees of support from different nations and factions. The UK’s recent formal recognition of the State of Palestine, alongside several other countries, adds another layer to the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
