Get ready, Simmers! A film adaptation of EA’s beloved game, The Sims, is officially underway, and it’s backed by none other than Oscar-winning producer Margot Robbie’s company, LuckyChap. Renowned Hollywood producer Roy Lee is also on board, and he’s just spilled some intriguing details about what we can expect from this highly anticipated video game movie.
In a recent interview, Lee hinted that the movie will be truly “unique.” He drew parallels to The Lego Movie, noting how many initially doubted its big-screen potential until they actually saw it. Lee believes The Sims film could evoke a similar reaction from audiences.
Interestingly, Lee was also a producer on The Lego Movie, as well as Robbie’s recent box office sensation, Barbie. He shared that if you’re trying to imagine the tone, “Somewhere in between both The Lego Movie and Barbie is where The Sims movie will be.” This suggests a blend of creative freedom, meta-humor, and thoughtful themes.
Casting details for The Sims 4 movie remain under wraps for now. Long-time fans might recall that a Sims film was first announced by Fox back in 2007, but it ultimately never came to fruition.
This new Sims film is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, with Kate Herron (known for Loki) directing and co-writing alongside Briony Redman (Doctor Who). This marks another major video game adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios, which is also bringing popular franchises like Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, Tomb Raider, God of War, and Life is Strange to the screen. Their highly acclaimed Fallout TV series is also set to return for its second season later this year.
Meanwhile, The Sims 4 game continues to thrive with ongoing updates, including a wealth of new content planned for this year. For those eagerly awaiting the next installment, there are currently no announced plans for The Sims 5.
Many other video game adaptations are currently in various stages of development. The gaming world is buzzing with potential film and TV projects, and it remains to be seen how many will eventually grace our screens.
