Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King enthusiasts should hurry to Amazon to secure the newly released limited editions of The Shining before they’re gone. The Film Vault has just made its Steelbook Special Edition and Solus Steelbook Editions of the iconic 1980 horror film available on 4K Blu-ray. The standard Steelbook Edition comes with an acetate slipcover and is currently priced at $48.86. For $87.07, the Steelbook Special Edition offers a wealth of extras, including a themed cigar box, two posters, five character cards, and three behind-the-scenes cards. Each Special Edition is individually numbered with a holographic sticker, limited to just 6,000 copies, so anticipate it selling out quickly.
These Film Vault collectible editions for The Shining were produced in the UK, featuring region-free 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs. Despite ordering from Amazon’s US site, both versions are shipped by Amazon Global Store UK, and the best part is the free international shipping to the US. While delivery might take approximately two weeks, the complimentary global shipping is a fantastic bonus.
These editions of The Shining were previously exclusive to Walmart in the US. While Amazon US isn’t officially selling them, Walmart did initially offer the Steelbook for $65 and the Special Edition for $100. However, both quickly sold out in August, and many orders were canceled in September due to inventory issues. The Special Edition never reappeared at Walmart, and the Steelbook Edition, restocked briefly last week, also sold out on October 3. Be aware that reseller prices on Walmart are now significantly higher.
The Shining is one of two early 80s horror films in The Film Vault Wave 3. It launched alongside the 1982 supernatural classic Poltergeist. Like The Shining, Poltergeist was a Walmart US exclusive, but those editions are also sold out. Luckily, Amazon also has the Poltergeist Special Edition Steelbook and Solus Steelbook in stock for $87.68 and $46.79, respectively. Both Poltergeist editions ship from Amazon UK and include region-free 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs. Walmart’s original prices were $100 for the Special Edition and $65 for the Solus Steelbook.
Both The Shining and Poltergeist Film Vault limited editions come with region-free 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs. Vice Press, in collaboration with Warner Bros. UK, designed all four releases.

The Special Edition’s cigar box prominently features a large silhouette of Jack Torrance wielding a fireman’s axe, overlooking the iconic Overlook Hotel. On the back, you’ll find Jack’s typewriter with a familiar, chilling phrase repeated: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
The eight art cards are housed in an envelope that replicates the infamous “All Work and No Play” page from the film. Five character cards showcase memorable scenes, while the other three offer rare behind-the-scenes production photos, including one of Stanley Kubrick on set.
The steelbook itself features stunning new artwork by Matt Ferguson & Florey, also seen on a new movie poster. A second poster included is a meticulously retouched version of Saul Bass’s iconic promotional poster from The Shining’s 1980 theatrical release.
This Special Edition comes with an acetate slipcover for the cigar box, not the steelbook. This allows the title and logos, which are printed on the slipcover, to be removed for a text-free display of the box art.

Unlike the Special Edition, the Solus Steelbook Edition features the acetate slipcover directly on the steelbook case. The movie title and logos are printed on this transparent slipcover, allowing you to display the case with or without text. This is the identical steelbook case included in the Special Edition.
The new artwork by Matt Ferguson & Florey of Vice Press depicts the memorable scene of Jack Torrance navigating the hedge maze. The back cover features the bathroom door famously marked with “Redrum” in red lipstick by Danny. Inside, the artwork showcases the hedge maze from the film on both sides.

For those unfamiliar with The Film Vault, it’s a series offering collectible editions of classic movies from the Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures catalogs. Launched in 2022 by Vice Press, a UK-based company specializing in licensed movie collectibles, all 4K Blu-rays from The Film Vault are region-free. However, due to its UK origin, these limited-edition versions of timeless classics are not regularly stocked by US retailers.
The Shining & Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
Paperback: $10.49 ($20) | Hardcover: $13.78 ($35)
Kubrick’s masterpiece, The Shining, was famously adapted from Stephen King’s chilling 1977 horror novel. King himself is well-known for his strong dislike of the film adaptation, which eventually led to a more faithful miniseries adaptation that aired on ABC in 1997. While the miniseries adheres more closely to the book, it’s generally not as highly acclaimed as Kubrick’s film, but it’s still worth a watch. Shout Factory released The Shining miniseries on Blu-ray in 2024.

In 2013, Scribner published Doctor Sleep, a compelling sequel to The Shining, following a grown-up Danny Torrance. Mike Flanagan directed the 2019 film adaptation of Doctor Sleep. Both the novel and the movie are excellent, though, perhaps unsurprisingly, neither quite reaches the legendary status of the originals.
Both original novels are currently available at attractive prices on Amazon in hardcover and paperback. The Shining’s trade paperback edition is on sale for $11.30 (originally $20), and the vintage hardcover can be found for $19.80 (originally $45). Meanwhile, Doctor Sleep is just $13.78 in hardcover and $10.49 in paperback.

Stanley Kubrick Movies on 4K Blu-ray
Most of Kubrick’s films have received 4K restorations in recent years.
Stanley Kubrick fans have yet another 4K Blu-ray to anticipate. Eyes Wide Shut, the director’s final film, is slated to join The Criterion Collection on November 25.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining Compendium
$125 | 2-Book Hardcover Box Set (1,396 Pages)
If a $100 edition of The Shining piques your interest, chances are you or someone you know is a devoted fan. Speaking as a huge fan myself, I’d personally choose the recently released compendium about the film over a new 4K Blu-ray edition without hesitation.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is an impressive two-volume, 1,396-page box set that provides an extraordinarily comprehensive deep dive into the making of the film. This beautifully designed slipcase collection, crafted by M/M Paris and published by Taschen earlier this year, is a true treasure.
Authored by J.W. Rinzler and edited by Pixar director Lee Unkrich, this compendium draws from hundreds of hours of interviews and extensive investigative research. The first book, featuring an introduction by Steven Spielberg, meticulously chronicles every stage of the production. Upon receiving my copy earlier this year, I was astonished by the incredible level of detail packed into the roughly 900-page hardcover. It’s hard to imagine a more thorough making-of book for a single film. This volume alone is almost as long as all three books in Rinzler’s fantastic The Making of Star Wars series.
The box set also includes a stunning scrapbook, brimming with a diverse collection of photographs, artwork, and documents related to The Shining’s production.
Simply put: this compendium stands as the ultimate collection of behind-the-scenes material I’ve ever encountered, across any medium.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is currently available on Amazon for $125. However, the exact print run and potential for future restocks are unknown. The box set initially sold out when preorders opened last summer and remained unavailable until just a few months ago.
