Released in 2006, the video game adaptation, “Scarface: The World Is Yours,” served as an intriguing alternate sequel to the iconic 1983 film starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana. For years, the game has been largely inaccessible to fans, making its recent reappearance as a pending re-release on major PC platforms a significant event. However, this unexpected return is shrouded in mystery, primarily due to the unknown publisher, EC Digital, and the unusual circumstances surrounding the launch.
The game briefly went live on one digital storefront prematurely, with its page also appearing on another prominent platform. An explanation cited a “technical issue during backend configuration” for the early push, clarifying that a broader release was intended later.
Further complicating matters, it was discovered that this premature release incorporated fan-made patches, SilentPatch and Fusion Fix, designed to improve the game’s playability on modern systems. While the use of these patches might be permissible under their licenses, the original creator of SilentPatch noted that prior communication would have been a respectful gesture.
Attempts to contact EC Digital have been unsuccessful, leaving the question of whether Universal, the rights holder for “Scarface,” sanctioned this re-release unanswered. Following public reports, EC Digital requested the game’s page be temporarily removed, citing “urgent discussions with multiple parties concerning the project’s status” and “ongoing licensing and technical matters.”
In a public statement, EC Digital apologized for the confusion caused by the unplanned early release, expressing hopes to bring the game back in the future should circumstances allow. For now, the PC re-release seems to be on hold. Interestingly, this development coincides with the recent Bluray release of the “Scarface Ultimate Collector’s Edition.”
