Anticipation is building as industry insiders reveal potential launch plans for the next generation of gaming consoles. Microsoft previously hinted at its future Xbox vision earlier this year, while Sony recently discussed its next PlayStation console. Now, reliable sources indicate that both the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox could arrive sooner than many expected, with a targeted launch year of 2027.
PlayStation 6: On Track for a 2027 Debut
According to KeplerL2, a tipster known for accurately leaking PS5 Pro specifications, Sony is aiming to release the PS6 in 2027. This information surfaced during a discussion about recent advancements in graphics technology from Sony and AMD, where Mark Cerny mentioned these innovations would appear in a “future console in a few years’ time.” When a user speculated about a 2027 launch for the PS6, KeplerL2 affirmed it as “the plan unless any unexpected delays happen.”
This isn’t the first time this tipster has shared such insights; earlier in the year, they also suggested that the PS6 chip design was complete, reinforcing the likelihood of a 2027 launch for Sony’s next console.
Xbox ‘Magnus’: Aiming for a 2027 Reveal
In a separate report, the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, recognized for its accurate leaks on gaming hardware, revealed details about the “AMD Magnus APU” that is expected to power the next-generation Xbox console. The leaker presented images of the chip, discussed its performance goals, and confirmed that the next Xbox is also slated for a 2027 release.
“It is targeting a 2027 launch,” the leaker stated. They further clarified that additional sources have corroborated Microsoft’s internal discussions with partners, openly pointing to 2027 as the launch year for Xbox Magnus.
Next-Gen Xbox to Potentially Outperform PS6, But at a Cost
Intriguingly, the tipster also suggested that the upcoming Xbox would be “stronger” than the PlayStation 6, but consequently, more expensive. Furthermore, the console is expected to function as a PC/console hybrid, an idea Microsoft has previously entertained.
“I do expect the Xbox Magnus to basically be a more premium version of the same performance you’d get from a PS6,” the leaker commented, adding that Xbox’s performance advantage would also extend to its PC-specific capabilities.
Earlier this year, Microsoft confirmed its partnership with AMD to develop these next-generation Xbox consoles. A key aspect of this collaboration is the commitment that these new consoles would not be restricted to a single store or device, hinting at a more open platform that could support third-party digital storefronts, similar to Steam.
Xbox president Sarah Bond has previously indicated that the next Xbox would be a Windows-centric device. During an announcement in June, Bond emphasized, “This is all about building you a gaming platform that’s always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want, delivering you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device.” She concluded, “That’s why we’re working closely with the Windows team, to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.”
