Warner Bros. has officially announced that the hit film Superman will be available on HBO Max starting September 19. This highly anticipated DC Universe entry is landing on the streaming service just over two months after its successful theatrical release in July, where it grossed an impressive $615 million worldwide.
For those preferring traditional television, Superman will also premiere on HBO linear on Saturday, September 20, at 8 PM ET. Additionally, HBO Max will offer an exclusive version of the film featuring American Sign Language (ASL), expertly interpreted by Deaf ASL Interpreter Giovanni Maucere and directed by Leila Hanaumi, known for her ASL interpretations of ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Last of Us’.
To celebrate its arrival, HBO Max is planning an immersive in-app takeover. The platform’s homepage will be transformed with refreshed Daily Planet-themed art, style, and unique content rails. Viewers can also explore a ‘Fortress of Solitude’ page featuring curated content, and discover hidden portals on the homepage that lead to ‘Lex Luthor’s Pocket Prison’.
Superman’s move to HBO Max follows a remarkably successful theatrical run. The film earned over $615 million at the box office, positioning it as the first, and potentially only, superhero movie of 2025 to exceed the $600 million mark. A significant portion of these earnings came from North American theaters, with director James Gunn sharing his insights on the film’s stronger domestic performance.
Previously, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn surprised fans by announcing Superman’s digital release on Friday, August 15, a mere month after its big-screen debut. Gunn explained that this accelerated home release was influenced by the HBO Max series Peacemaker Season 2, which directly continues from Superman’s storyline and acts as a prequel to Gunn’s subsequent Superman film, Man of Tomorrow.
Just last week, Gunn provided the initial details for his next project, Man of Tomorrow. He had previously hinted that this wouldn’t be a conventional Superman sequel. Instead, Man of Tomorrow will see Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly join forces against an even greater menace. Gunn described it as ‘as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.’

Production for Man of Tomorrow is set to commence in April 2026, targeting a July 9, 2027 release date. This swift turnaround, just two years after Superman, is possible because, as Gunn noted, ‘it’s gonna be out in two years, July 9, 2027, which is a relatively short time between sequels, because we knew immediately where we were going.’
Gunn elaborated on the plot, stating, ‘And it is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together, to a certain degree, against a much, much bigger threat. And it’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly.’

Looking further ahead, 2026 is slated to bring Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface to the DCU, all preceding Man of Tomorrow’s release the following year.
