Snack Attack? AI System Mistook Doritos for a Weapon, Leading to Student’s Handcuffing

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a common tool in school safety protocols, its promise of enhanced security is now facing intense scrutiny. A recent event at Kenwood High School in Baltimore has ignited a widespread discussion regarding the limitations of automated surveillance, bringing to light critical questions about accuracy, the necessity of human oversight, and the unforeseen repercussions of relying on technology for rapid safety decisions.

A student was handcuffed after an AI system mistook his bag of Doritos for a gun.

Taki Allen, a high school student, suddenly found himself at the center of this controversy when an AI-powered gun detection system mistakenly identified his bag of Doritos as a weapon. On a Monday evening, Allen was enjoying a snack with friends outside the school when law enforcement officers unexpectedly arrived.

“At first, I didn’t know where they were going until they started walking towards me with guns, talking about, ‘Get on the ground,’ and I was like, ‘What?’” Allen recounted to WBAL-TV 11 News.

The student was reportedly forced to his knees, handcuffed, and thoroughly searched. However, officers discovered no actual weapons. It was only after the search that Allen was presented with a photograph captured by the AI system, which had triggered the alert. “I was just holding a Doritos bag – it was two hands and one finger out, and they said it looked like a gun,” he explained to WBAL-TV 11 News.

AI Surveillance in Schools: Promise and Pitfalls

Baltimore County high schools implemented this AI-based gun detection system last year. The system is designed to monitor school cameras for potential threats, automatically sending alerts to both school authorities and law enforcement when it flags objects it perceives as suspicious.

While this technology aims to improve student safety, the incident involving Taki Allen starkly illustrates the significant risk of false positives. Such errors are particularly concerning in high-stakes environments where rapid responses can inadvertently escalate tensions and cause undue alarm.

A statement from the Baltimore County Police confirmed the sequence of events: “Officers assigned to Precinct 11-Essex responded to Kenwood High School following a report of a suspicious person with a weapon. Once on scene, the person was searched and it was determined the subject was not in possession of any weapons,” WBAL-TV 11 News reported.

School Response and Support Measures

In a letter addressed to families, Kenwood High School acknowledged the profound impact of the incident. As reported by WBAL-TV 11 News, the school stated: “We understand how upsetting this was for the individual that was searched as well as the other students who witnessed the incident. Our counselors will provide direct support to the students who were involved in this incident and are also available to speak with any student who may need support.”

Allen’s grandfather, Lamont Davis, shared his perspective on the emotional toll this experience took. “Nobody wants this to happen to their child. No one wants this to happen,” he expressed to WBAL-TV 11 News.

Balancing Technology and Human Judgment

The incident at Kenwood High School highlights the complex challenges of integrating AI into sensitive environments like educational institutions. While AI technology can be a valuable asset in identifying potential threats, an over-reliance on automated systems without sufficient human verification can lead to unnecessary distress and, crucially, erode trust between students and authorities.

For Taki Allen, this experience serves as a stark reminder of how quickly technology can escalate a situation, even in the absence of any real danger. For schools across the nation, it prompts a vital question: How can we effectively leverage the potential of AI while ensuring that human judgment and empathy remain central to decisions that directly impact student safety and well-being?

As AI continues to expand its role in educational settings, incidents such as this will be crucial in shaping future protocols, refining oversight mechanisms, and guiding the broader conversation about the responsible deployment of technology to safeguard students.
