Simple Energy, the innovative electric scooter manufacturer gearing up for its IPO, has officially commenced commercial production of India’s very first rare earth-free motors. This landmark achievement is taking place at their state-of-the-art facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
This groundbreaking development significantly reinforces Simple Energy’s vision of creating products “Built in India, for the World.” It also paves the way for more resilient, sustainable, and geopolitically independent supply chains within the electric vehicle sector.
Suhas Rajkumar, co-founder and CEO of Simple Energy, emphasized the critical importance of this step: “Recent global supply chain upheavals and our reliance on specific materials have made one truth undeniable: the future of electric mobility hinges on self-reliance. A deeply localized, ‘Make in India’ strategy is no longer just a goal; it’s an absolute necessity.”
Excitingly, this new generation of motors maintains the high performance and powerful torque that consumers expect, all without needing any heavy rare earth elements.
Rajkumar elaborated on the innovation: “Our patented, in-house technology ingeniously replaces traditional heavy rare earth magnets with advanced, optimized compounds. This is further enhanced by our proprietary algorithms, which intelligently manage heat and torque in real-time. The fact that these motors are already in production clearly demonstrates that superior performance can indeed be delivered hand-in-hand with enhanced sustainability and strategic autonomy.”
This initiative comes at a crucial time, especially after China, a dominant supplier of these essential minerals, imposed significant supply restrictions in April, which had a considerable impact on the global and domestic automobile industries.
Faced with these material constraints, Simple Energy proactively sought and rigorously tested alternative compounds. Their meticulous efforts resulted in a design that delivers performance equivalent to systems reliant on heavy rare earths. This breakthrough was made possible by combining innovative materials with the company’s unique, in-house developed algorithms, which precisely control the motor’s heat management, magnetic field, and torque output.
