Even before its official launch on September 25, PC players who gained early access to Silent Hill F have wasted no time in unleashing a collection of mods for the highly anticipated game. Among these, one particularly striking modification completely eradicates the series’ iconic fog from the eerie Japanese town of Ebisugaoka. This surprising change transforms the perpetually gloomy landscape into a surprisingly clear, almost pleasant day for protagonist Hinako Shimizu – at least until she inevitably encounters something horrifying.
As humorously showcased in a recent social media post, the game loses a significant portion of its intimidation factor when the environment is no longer shrouded in thick mist. This echoes a similar mod created for last year’s Silent Hill 2 remake, which also allowed players to eliminate the pervasive fog.
Beyond the fog-removal, other impressive community-made modifications for Silent Hill F include the implementation of hardware-based ray tracing for enhanced visuals, options to remove the entire heads-up display (HUD) for a more immersive experience, and various optimization tweaks designed to improve the game’s engine performance.
Silent Hill F marks a significant shift for the long-running horror franchise, being the very first installment to be set in Japan. The game’s narrative unfolds in the 1960s, following high school student Hinako as she grapples with the terrifying reality of her town being consumed by an unending, ominous fog and infested with grotesque creatures. Critically acclaimed, Silent Hill F earned an impressive 9 out of 10 in GameSpot’s review.
Remarkably, this new entry arrives less than a year after Bloober Team’s successful remake of Silent Hill 2. Given the positive reception of that title, Konami and Bloober Team are once again collaborating to produce a remake of the original Silent Hill, though a release date for this highly anticipated project has not yet been announced.
Looking ahead, the Silent Hill universe will also make its return to cinemas next year with the film ‘Return to Silent Hill.’ This movie is set to adapt the narrative of Silent Hill 2, with original Silent Hill director and screenwriter Christophe Gans returning to direct. The cast includes Jeremy Irvine as James Sunderland, Hannah Emily Anderson as Mary, and Evie Templeton as Laura. Fans can expect ‘Return to Silent Hill’ to premiere in theaters on January 23, 2026.
