While many Pokémon are adorable icons, Gengar, with its signature purple body, shiny grin, and captivating red eyes, undeniably steals the spotlight every Halloween. It’s that perfect blend of mischievous and endearing. So, it’s no shock that Gengar is the star of Razer’s newest Kitty V2 headset. What is surprising, however, is the incredible attention to detail poured into the Razer Kitty V2 Gengar Edition.
Priced at $139.99 / £149.99, this special edition carries a $40 / £50 premium over the standard Kitty V2 model. While the Kitty V2 isn’t typically a top contender on our list of best gaming headsets for its raw performance or value, this Gengar iteration offers a delightful visual departure from the often uninspired designs of many headphones. Of course, headsets like the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro will deliver superior audio performance, but the Gengar Edition prioritizes a different kind of appeal.
Without a doubt, the headset’s standout feature is its impeccable style, drenched in Gengar’s signature ghoulish charm. Having recently reviewed a Razer x Pokémon Kanto bundle, which featured various Razer products with subtle Pokémon branding, I can confidently say the Kitty V2 Gengar Edition goes far beyond minor adjustments. This is a significant transformation of the original model.
The headset features Gengar’s icon on its RGB earcups, showcasing its ghoulish brilliance.
Forget the typical pointed, symmetrical ears of the standard Kitty model; the Kitty V2 Gengar boasts ears that perfectly mimic Gengar’s iconic shape – more outward-facing and subtly tilted backward. This isn’t just a slight adjustment; it’s a complete redesign of the ear architecture, demonstrating a genuine commitment to the Gengar theme.
Between these distinct ears, you’ll find Gengar’s familiar purple tuft. The earcups themselves are bathed in Gengar’s signature purple hue, and even the RGB Razer logo has been cleverly swapped for a subtle silhouette of the Pokémon—a fantastic extra touch. Completing the design, an outline of Gengar, complete with its iconic glare, is subtly placed inside each earcup, adding a perfectly eerie vibe.

This impressive design masterfully captures Gengar’s spirit without compromising the comfort Razer headsets are known for. Regarding audio, while this was my first experience with a Kitty V2 model, having used many other Razer headsets, I found the sound quality to be perfectly adequate. It doesn’t quite match the caliber of the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro, but it offers robust bass, a respectable soundstage, and delivers an enjoyable listening experience overall.
While I wished for clearer microphone audio, I could discern in-game sounds effectively, especially in fast-paced shooter games. Music from various artists, including Sleep Token, Kendrick Lamar, and Brakence, also came through quite well. Ultimately, the Gengar aesthetic is the primary draw here, and Razer truly excels in delivering on that front.
So, would I recommend the Razer Kitty V2 Gengar Edition? Absolutely, but with a caveat: this headset is truly for the devoted Pokémon fan, particularly those who adore Gengar. While the headphones themselves offer decent performance, the premium price is undeniably for the distinctive design. Many other headsets provide superior overall audio quality at a similar cost. Nevertheless, the sheer visual appeal and tactile experience of these headphones are undeniable, even if it means a slight compromise on top-tier sound.
If you’re looking for more excellent Razer gear, consider the Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed, a consistent favorite on many best gaming mouse lists. For my personal setup, the Razer BlackWidow V4, an excellent option on top gaming keyboard lists, has been a reliable companion for a while.
