Prosenjit Chatterjee, a stalwart of Bengali cinema, expressed his deep pride in being associated with the upcoming historical drama ‘Devi Chowdhurani.’ The film, directed by Subhrajit Mitra, is an adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic work, where Chatterjee essays the role of the charismatic and rebellious saint, Bhavani Pathak. The actor shared his excitement about portraying such a layered historical character, highlighting his meticulous approach to acting and his continuous pursuit of challenging roles. Chatterjee sees Bhavani Pathak as more than just a saint; he’s a learned individual, a skilled warrior, and a protector who taught villagers self-defense during the British Raj. He drew parallels with his earlier role in ‘Moner Manush’ but emphasized the distinct warrior aspect of Bhavani Pathak, making the decision to accept the role an immediate ‘yes’ due to its rarity. The film also features Srabanti Chatterjee in the titular role, alongside a strong ensemble cast including Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Arjun Chakraborty. Set in 18th-century Bengal, ‘Devi Chowdhurani’ chronicles the journey of a village girl’s transformation into a revolutionary leader under Pathak’s guidance. Chatterjee lauded Srabanti Chatterjee’s performance, predicting that audiences will be astonished by her transformation within minutes of the film. He also reflected on the cultural significance of releasing films during Durga Puja, a time of immense celebration for Bengalis, noting how this period has become crucial for Bengali cinema’s success, starting with films like ‘Autograph’ and ‘Baishey Shrabon.’ The film is produced by Aparna Dasgupta and Aniruddha Dasgupta, with its theatrical release slated for September 26.
