History’s first American Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, has once again publicly advocated for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and the release of all hostages captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Speaking from his tranquil country estate in Castel Gandolfo late on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Pope Leo shared his hopeful outlook for the proposed peace initiative aimed at bringing an end to the protracted war.
He described the proposal as a ‘realistic’ path forward, stating, “It seems to be a pragmatic offer with very promising elements. I earnestly hope Hamas will accept it within the designated timeframe.”
Furthermore, Pope Leo voiced profound apprehension regarding the impending humanitarian aid flotilla heading towards Gaza. With more than 50 boats expected to attempt to breach the Israeli naval blockade overnight, as they approach within 150 nautical miles of Gaza, the situation remains tense.
While acknowledging the flotilla organizers’ commendable desire to address the severe humanitarian emergency plaguing Gaza, the Pope nonetheless expressed deep concern over the potential for escalating violence.
The Italian government has already cautioned the flotilla organizers that Israel might interpret their actions as a ‘hostile act,’ strongly urging them to halt their mission. Italy has suggested an alternative delivery route via Cyprus, offering assurances that the Catholic Church would then ensure the aid reaches the Palestinian people.
