Singapore’s Senior Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, recently spoke at Chatham House in London, highlighting the city-state’s strategic approach to foreign policy and its unique position amidst global geopolitical shifts. During the event, titled “How Singapore is surviving and thriving between China and the United States,” Lee underscored Singapore’s commitment to making foreign policy decisions based on its own national interests, rather than aligning with any single major power.
He also touched upon Singapore’s success in fostering a unified national identity among its multi-racial population. Lee noted that while a strong sense of shared identity is crucial, it remains vulnerable to foreign influence and misinformation, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
Addressing the topic of immigration, the Senior Minister acknowledged Singapore’s reliance on foreign workers while stressing the importance of maintaining a balance to preserve social cohesion. He appealed to Singaporeans for graciousness and understanding towards immigrants, and in turn, reminded foreign residents to respect local norms and traditions. His memorable phrase, “Please keep the bling down,” served as a succinct reminder for modesty and mutual respect within the community.
Reflecting on past challenges, Lee also recalled Singapore’s efforts in supporting its migrant worker population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
