In a powerful display of emotion and relief, hundreds of Palestinians gathered in Ramallah to welcome the return of 250 prisoners released by Israel. The release is a significant development, forming part of a broader ceasefire deal with Hamas. Many of those freed had been serving lengthy sentences, including life sentences, in Israeli prisons.
The BBC’s Barbara Plett Usher was on the ground, witnessing the joyous reception for 100 of these individuals. The atmosphere was electric as families and supporters greeted their loved ones with rapturous applause.
Adding to the momentum of these releases, approximately 1,700 detainees from Gaza are also being freed by Israel, with 15 of them being minors. Furthermore, the 20 hostages who had been held by Hamas in Gaza for over two years have also been liberated, marking a crucial step in de-escalating tensions.
