OpenAI and Jony Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, are reportedly collaborating on a series of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) hardware. While an AI-powered smart speaker is a key focus, it’s just one of several devices in the pipeline. This partnership between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive is also said to be exploring smart glasses and an AI digital recorder. Interestingly, an AI Pin, similar to existing wearable devices, is also being considered, though Ive is reportedly less enthusiastic about this particular product.
OpenAI’s Ambitious Plans for Diverse AI Devices
Reports from The Information, also noted by The Verge, indicate that OpenAI harbors significant hardware ambitions. Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted that a forthcoming product would be considered the essential ‘third core device’ on a desk, alongside a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. Sources familiar with the developments now suggest that a smart speaker is among these groundbreaking products, with an AI digital recorder also in active development.
Details about these devices remain scarce, and with a projected launch timeline stretching to late 2026 or early 2027, it’s probable they are still in the early stages of production. Interestingly, some of the devices now under consideration, like AI-integrated smart glasses and an AI Pin resembling Humane’s offering, were previously downplayed by Altman himself. This raises questions about a potential shift in strategy or new developments.
It’s worth noting that Altman had previously stated that OpenAI was not pursuing wearable technology. Furthermore, Jony Ive himself had expressed reservations about devices akin to the AI Pin. This leaves open the question of whether there’s been a change of heart regarding the AI hardware ecosystem or if the current reports might be misinterpretations.
In a strategic move, OpenAI is reportedly leveraging Apple’s established supply chain for its hardware production. The company, known for ChatGPT, has reportedly secured a manufacturing contract with Luxshare, a key partner that also assembles iPhones and AirPods for Apple. There are also reports that OpenAI has engaged with Goertek, a manufacturer responsible for assembling Apple’s HomePods and Apple Watches.
The collaboration between OpenAI and LoveFrom is reportedly extending beyond manufacturing, with efforts underway to attract talent from Apple. According to an anonymous source close to the matter, several Apple employees have transitioned to either OpenAI or LoveFrom. Tang Tan, OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer, is said to be enticing Apple staff with promises of reduced bureaucracy and a more collaborative environment at OpenAI.
