Ola Electric officially announced its entry into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market on Thursday, October 16, 2025. This strategic move targets a sector poised for significant growth, projected to escalate from its current valuation of ₹1 lakh crore to over ₹3 lakh crore by 2030.
The Bengaluru-based electric vehicle manufacturer has unveiled ‘Ola Shakti’, its brand-new portable battery energy storage system designed to power homes, farms, and various businesses.
During a media conference, Ola Electric CMD Bhavish Aggarwal emphasized the critical need for advanced energy storage in India. He stated, “India doesn’t face an energy shortage; what it faces is an energy storage issue. There is a huge gap between energy production and demand. Solar can only fulfill half of the story, while battery storage will complete it.”
Aggarwal further elaborated that energy consumption typically reaches its peak during nighttime hours, precisely when solar energy generation is unavailable. By introducing Ola Shakti, the company aims to bridge this gap, transforming it into a vital opportunity for achieving broader energy independence.
The company anticipates that its Gigafactory’s annual production for the BESS market will grow to 5GWh, a volume expected to surpass its automotive battery consumption within the next couple of years.
“We have successfully developed world-class battery and cell technology for electric mobility. Ola Shakti extends that innovation directly to homes, empowering them to store and utilize clean energy intelligently,” Aggarwal added.
He also highlighted that Ola Shakti represents a logical progression for Ola Electric. It leverages the company’s existing cutting-edge cell technology, robust Gigafactory production capabilities, and its extensive nationwide Ola network, which serves as a ready sales and distribution backbone—all achieved with zero incremental capital expenditure or additional research and development investment.
Powered by Ola’s proprietary 4680 Bharat Cells, Ola Shakti proudly stands as the country’s first residential BESS that is entirely designed, engineered, and manufactured within India.
The Ola Shakti BESS will be available in several configurations: 1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh, and 9.1 kWh. Introductory pricing for the first 10,000 units ranges from ₹29,999 to ₹1,59,999, respectively. Reservations for these systems commenced on Thursday, with deliveries scheduled to begin during Makar Sankranti 2026.
This versatile system is engineered to power a range of essential appliances, including air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cookers, farm pumps, and communication equipment. It boasts impressive charging times, with some units fully charging in as little as 2 hours, and offers a backup capacity of up to 1.5 hours on a full load.
Addressing potential safety concerns, Ola’s product team confirmed that the new system delivers automotive-grade safety, achieves an industry-leading efficiency of up to 98%, and significantly offers zero running and maintenance costs—a notable advantage over conventional lead-acid inverters or diesel generators.
