Octopath Traveler 0 Story, Setting, and Characters
Octopath Traveler 0 draws inspiration from the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. It takes place on Orsterra, the same beloved setting as Champions of the Continent and the original Octopath Traveler. The narrative kicks off dramatically during the Day of Reverence ceremony in Wishvale, where the city is violently attacked and razed. Your created character is then tasked with both rebuilding their home and seeking vengeance against those responsible.
The reveal trailer introduced several key story characters: Stia, an Architect and your childhood friend; Phenn, a vigilant Huntsman; and Laurana, a Cleric. Square Enix has stated that the game will feature over 30 playable characters, each possessing unique abilities. Future character reveals have expanded the roster to include Celsus the thief, Alexia the Scholar, Ludo the Merchant, Viator the Warrior, and Macy the Apothecary. The antagonists revealed so far include Herminia, the Covetous Witch; Tytos, the Hero; and Auguste, the Playwright.
Octopath Traveler 0 Gameplay
Octopath Traveler 0 carries forward the beloved freeform exploration elements from previous titles. There’s no single linear path you’re forced to follow; instead, you can choose your own adventure. However, certain areas may prove more challenging depending on your party’s composition, skills, and equipment. You’ll engage with NPCs using various character-specific Path Actions, such as ‘Entreat’ (to request items) and ‘Inquire’ (to gather more information). A notable new Path Action is ‘Invite,’ which allows you to persuade an NPC to join your growing town.
Enemy encounters vary, with some occurring randomly in specific zones and others visibly appearing on the map. Among these are powerful elite-tier enemies that demand advanced strategy and strength to overcome.
Octopath Traveler 0 Combat
Similar to the original Octopath Traveler and its sequel, Octopath Traveler 0 features engaging turn-based combat. Your primary goal is to strategically target enemy weaknesses to break down their ‘shields.’ Once an enemy’s shields are depleted, they enter a vulnerable stun state, creating a prime opportunity for a powerful attack. You can also utilize a ‘Boost’ during a character’s turn to amplify the effectiveness of their skills. A key difference in OT0’s combat is the expanded party size: up to eight characters can participate, a significant increase from the four-character limit in previous games. Front-row characters actively engage in combat, while back-row team members provide various passive boosts. The ability to switch characters between rows mid-battle adds another layer of strategic depth. For a deeper dive into combat mechanics, refer to our Gamescom preview.
Octopath Traveler 0’s New Features
Octopath Traveler 0 introduces several significant new mechanics. One major addition is town-building, which tasks you with reconstructing the devastated Wishvale. In this mode, you’ll use collected materials to place and construct various structures. As you progress, you can recruit characters who will assist in rebuilding, such as staffing facilities. These facilities can also be upgraded through completing quests. For a comprehensive look at the town-building system, check out our Gamescom preview of Octopath Traveler 0.
Another substantial new feature is character creation and customization, which we’ll explore further below.
How Character Creation Works in Octopath Traveler 0
Given that all characters are rendered in stunning 2D pixel art, character creation in Octopath Traveler 0 offers a unique experience compared to many 3D titles. You’ll be able to customize your character by selecting a base gender, subtle facial details (including eye appearance and color), hairstyle and hair color, skin tone, victory/action poses, voice, and name. The trailer also hints at choices for a starting Learned Skill (similar to Hikari’s mechanic in Octopath Traveler II), an initial job, a favorite food (granting specific stat boosts), and starting gear.
