The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced that the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be jointly awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi. Their pioneering work on the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has earned them this prestigious honor, revealed on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
Recalling last year’s accolades, the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was shared by David Baker for his contributions to computational protein design, alongside Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for their advancements in protein structure prediction.
The week of Nobel announcements began on Monday, October 6, 2025, with the Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This award recognized Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking identification of regulatory T cells, often referred to as the immune system’s ‘security guards.’ The following day, Tuesday, October 7, saw the Physics Nobel presented to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martini for their work in constructing devices that demonstrate ‘quantum tunneling.’
Anticipation builds for the remaining prizes: the Nobel Prizes for Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences are scheduled to be announced on October 9, October 10, and October 13, respectively.
Each of these prestigious awards includes a substantial cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor, which translates to approximately ₹1.03 crore. The official award ceremony for all laureates will take place on December 10.
The Nobel Prize itself is a legacy of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who, in his will, stipulated that his fortune should be used to honor individuals who, in the preceding year, had ‘conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.’
