Nigerian Police Disperse Protesters with Tear Gas Over Separatist Leader’s Detention

In the Nigerian capital, Abuja, police forces deployed tear gas to disperse a gathering of protesters. The demonstration was organized to call for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, a leading figure in the Biafran separatist movement. Kanu, who heads the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), has been in detention since 2021 and faces terrorism charges, which he denies. He also holds British citizenship.

The protesters, including activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, began assembling early in the morning. Eyewitnesses reported that police fired tear gas to break up the crowds, and significant road closures in the capital led to traffic disruptions.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the arrest of several individuals, including members of Kanu’s family and his legal team, though the police have yet to comment on these reports. Ipob seeks to establish an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria. The organization was outlawed in 2017, and its armed wing has been linked to violent incidents.

Kanu, who has a significant following, previously jumped bail in 2017 following a military raid on his home and left the country. His legal battles have continued, with various court decisions impacting his trial. His defense is set to begin soon, following a recent court ruling.
