Chances are, if you’ve touched a PC or console game in the past year, you’ve likely delved into a remake or remaster. Recent studies indicate these revitalized titles aren’t just popular; they’re considered highly desirable by players.
According to MTM, a leading strategy and insights firm, a survey of 1,500 regular gamers across the US and UK highlights a significant appetite for remakes and remasters. Martin Bradley, head of gaming at MTM, noted that while these games hold immense appeal, developers must strike a careful balance. Interestingly, many remakes are now vastly outperforming their initial releases in sales.
The article also featured a video review of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
A surprising 85% of players enjoying remakes and remasters had never experienced the original titles. This suggests that while nostalgia plays a role, it’s not the sole driving force. MTM’s findings indicate that gamers are drawn to these reimaginings even when aware they might forgo newer, more innovative experiences.
Publishers have actively embraced this trend, complementing new releases with a steady stream of resurrected classics. This year alone saw popular titles like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered (a current bestseller), Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, and House of the Dead 2: Remake hit the market. The future also looks bright for fans, with highly anticipated remakes of Persona 4, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell in development.
Nintendo, a company long known for cherishing its legacy, continues to innovate beyond simple remakes. They’re even bringing back the cult classic Virtual Boy console – in a unique, modern form.
This means Virtual Boy titles will soon be accessible via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass starting February 17, 2026. To fully immerse themselves, players will need a new accessory designed to mimic the original console, into which they can dock their Switch or upcoming Switch 2 device.
