Fans of the 2009 action game, Prototype, are buzzing with excitement as new evidence suggests a potential remaster could be on the horizon!
Despite remaining largely untouched on Steam for the past 16 years, observant players recently noticed a flurry of background updates. A detailed data-mining effort then uncovered a mysterious revision to the game’s credits. This updated list now prominently features remaster studio Iron Galaxy, along with a curious reference to Ubisoft Connect.
“One of the original modders who delved into the game’s recent update found a lot of intriguing details,” explained StanleyMitchel on the game’s subreddit. “For Prototype 1, they’ve added several test maps and a notable number of new names to the credits. This definitely sparks hope for a remaster after all.”
The changes are quite extensive, with a total of 753 modifications made to the original credit roll. These additions include a new “downloadable content” team, a specific team for a “Ubisoft Connect Version,” “Activision Localization,” “Demonware,” and, as mentioned, “Iron Galaxy Studios.”
“One of the new studios listed in the credits previously worked on the acclaimed Spyro remasters,” Nixson shared on Discord. “This is 100% confirmed. They are remastering the games, likely employing a similar engine or a hybrid code approach, reminiscent of how Oblivion was handled. With so many new Activision studios appearing in the credits, I’m truly starting to believe that a new Prototype game or remaster is indeed in the works.”
What about the unexpected Ubisoft Connect reference? It’s important to recall that during Microsoft’s historic $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision in 2023, Microsoft agreed to sell Activision’s cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft. While none of this is officially confirmed, it’s plausible that Prototype could be one of the titles Ubisoft intends to add to its subscription service. Keep a close watch on further developments!
In Prototype, players step into the role of Alex Mercer, a dark, genetically mutated shape-shifter struggling with amnesia. Driven to solve the mystery of his own existence, he unleashes chaos across New York City. Upon its release in 2009, IGN praised Prototype for its many cool features, though we noted it lacked some of the final polish that elevates a game to truly memorable status.
