Next year marks the monumental 30th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, and to celebrate, it’s making a grand return to the big screen. The reboot film is helmed by Zach Cregger, known for his work on *Weapons* and *Barbarian*. Filming is slated to begin soon, and Cregger has just announced a fresh wave of talent joining the cast.
Reports confirm that Zach Cherry, an Emmy-nominated actor from Apple TV+’s *Severance*, is among the latest additions. He’s set to portray a hospital scientist, a role that adds intriguing depth to the zombie-infested world. Cherry is also recognized for his appearances in major films like *Spider-Man: Homecoming* and *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, as well as the popular *Fallout* TV series.
Joining him is Kali Reis, the accomplished *True Detective: Night Country* actress and former boxer. She will play a military veteran, a role originally conceptualized as a male character. Comedian Johnno Wilson, who featured in *Twisted Metal Season 2*, has also secured a part in the film.
Austin Abrams, a standout from *Weapons*, takes on a leading role in the Resident Evil movie, though he will not be portraying an existing character from the beloved video games. Cregger has indicated that the film will draw inspiration from *Resident Evil 2*, *Resident Evil 3*, and *Resident Evil 4*, aiming to maintain the continuity and tone of these iconic stories without directly adapting their protagonists.
Cregger clarified his approach, stating, “I’m adhering to the established lore, but I’m not bringing in any main, canonical characters, as those are already well-defined in the games. I believe I’m not taking any more creative liberties with this film than the game franchise itself does. I see myself as coloring within the lines.”
The production is scheduled to kick off later this month in Prague. Fans can mark their calendars for the *Resident Evil* film’s theatrical release on September 18, 2026. Additionally, the next game in the series, *Resident Evil Requiem*, is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 27, 2026.
