The upcoming American Psycho movie will not feature a gender-swapped serial killer protagonist, contrary to recent claims.
In both the original American Psycho novel and the critically acclaimed 2000 film adaptation, the notorious killer is Patrick Bateman. Christian Bale delivered a memorable performance as Bateman in the earlier movie, a role considered one of his finest.
Reports from ‘The Sun’ had initially suggested that director Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation might star Margot Robbie as a female version of the titular murderer. However, ‘Deadline,’ citing sources directly involved with the project, has debunked these claims.
The Sun’s earlier article posited that changing the protagonist’s gender would offer a fresh perspective on the controversial novel and its portrayal of crimes. It suggested this twist would provide a different angle for the remake.
For those curious about a female-led ‘American Psycho’ narrative, there’s always ‘American Psycho II: All American Girl,’ a direct-to-video sequel starring Mila Kunis as a killer inspired by Patrick Bateman. However, this film famously landed on our list of movie sequels that should have never been made.
Best Margot Robbie Movies
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Margot Robbie has been linked to a gender-swapped role. The star, known for her roles in ‘Barbie’ and ‘Suicide Squad,’ was previously considered for a reboot of Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise.
While the role of Patrick Bateman in the new film is yet to be officially cast, earlier rumors hinted that Austin Butler might be in the running.
It’s important to note that Luca Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’ is not intended as a direct remake of Mary Harron’s 2000 film. Instead, it aims to be a more faithful adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ chilling 1991 novel.
Scott Z. Burns is penning the screenplay for the new movie, which will be released by Lionsgate. Production will be handled by Frenesy Films, with Sam Pressman serving as executive producer.
