Namibia Issues Warning: No Parties Allowed in Cemeteries After ‘Disgraceful’ Event

Namibian authorities are reminding citizens that cemeteries are sacred places after a recent event in Windhoek’s Gammams cemetery drew strong criticism. The City of Windhoek confirmed that a gathering at the site included seating, cooler boxes, and alcohol, turning a place of remembrance into what one witness described as a “disgraceful” scene resembling a bar rather than a cemetery.

The cemetery was left littered with bottles and cans, prompting officials to issue a statement condemning the behaviour. They emphasized that such actions are unacceptable as they disrespect the deceased and disturb grieving families. Littering in cemeteries is a criminal offence, and authorities have pledged to increase monitoring and enforcement to preserve the sanctity of these burial grounds. They reiterated that cemeteries are strictly for burials and remembrance, with social gatherings, alcohol consumption, and littering strictly prohibited.

This incident is not the first time Gammams cemetery has been in the news. In 2021, a man was arrested following a viral video showing him firing shots during a funeral, and cars were seen performing stunts in the parking area.
