The highly anticipated “Mounts of Mayhem” update has just landed in Minecraft’s Bedrock edition, bringing exciting news for fans of the new spear weapon. This addition to the beloved sandbox game offers impressive range and mobility, with the added benefit of dismounting opponents. However, its most dynamic ability, the ‘Lunge’ attack, was previously impractical due to its extreme durability drain. That’s all changed now!
The Minecraft spear, a key feature of the Mounts of Mayhem update, was initially introduced in a Java snapshot last week and is now available in the Bedrock edition’s preview. This allows all players to experience the new Nautilus mount, which grants underwater breathing while ridden, battle formidable zombie horseback riders, and master the new spear weapon.
To unleash the spear’s most exciting maneuver, you need to apply the ‘Lunge’ enchantment. This enchantment propels you forward with each basic jab, making it incredibly useful for swift traversal, especially when paired with an Elytra cape. Imagine gliding through the air, then launching a devastating charge attack that leverages your speed for maximum damage!
However, there was a significant drawback: using the ‘Lunge’ enchantment drastically reduced the spear’s durability. A single level one lunge would cost eight durability points, rising to 32 at level two, and an astonishing 128 at level three. To put this in perspective, a copper spear has a total durability of 190, and an iron spear has 250.
Furthermore, ‘Lunge’ couldn’t be combined with the ‘Mending’ enchantment, rendering the ability largely impractical for long-term use. Thankfully, a new Minecraft snapshot has rectified this! Players can now enchant their spears with both ‘Lunge’ and ‘Mending,’ allowing them to repair their weapon’s durability by collecting experience orbs from defeated enemies between their powerful dashes.
While the durability cost for ‘Lunge’ could still be reduced further, this change is definitely a positive step. The update also introduces other fun features, like the ability to leash zombie horses after you’ve dealt with their undead riders. You can even control Nautilus mounts on land now – though they’ll still be gasping for water, you’ll have an easier time guiding them back to their aquatic home.
The latest Minecraft snapshot, 25w42a, is currently available, along with the initial “Mounts of Mayhem” test release in Minecraft preview. For a comprehensive list of all the new tweaks and data pack changes, be sure to check the official patch notes.
