Mexico Reels from Devastating Floods: At Least 27 Dead, Many More Missing

Mexico is grappling with the severe aftermath of widespread flooding that has resulted in at least 27 confirmed deaths and left numerous people missing. The catastrophic events, triggered by heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday, caused rivers to breach their banks, leading to devastating landslides and flash floods. The eastern state of Hidalgo has been particularly hard-hit, reporting 16 fatalities. Thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, with communities inundated by fast-moving water that carried away cars and infrastructure. Highways are impassable due to debris, and power outages are widespread. President Claudia Sheinbaum has mobilized 5,400 personnel, including naval troops, to assist with rescue efforts, road clearing, and aid distribution, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting affected populations and restoring essential services. In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta confirmed at least nine deaths and five missing individuals, with an estimated 80,000 people affected by the severe weather in that state alone. Two additional deaths were reported in Veracruz. Residents describe scenes of immense destruction, with floodwaters reaching significant heights, devastating homes and businesses.
