Fans of the captivating historical mystery anime, The Apothecary Diaries, are in for a huge treat! Following a celebratory second-anniversary event, TOHO Animation has officially unveiled plans for not only a third season but also an exciting, brand-new original movie.
The upcoming third season will be delivered in two thrilling parts, with the first premiering in October 2026 and the second following in April 2027. To sweeten the deal, TOHO also launched a special trailer celebrating memorable moments from the first two seasons, perfectly synchronized with the show’s iconic opening themes. The biggest surprise of the event was the confirmation of a feature film, crafted by The Apothecary Diaries creator Natsu Hyuuga herself. This untitled movie promises an entirely original narrative, slated for a December 2026 release in Japan.
A ‘Super Teaser Visual’ has also been unveiled, hinting at fresh mysteries for Maomao to unravel. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as more details emerge.
While the upcoming season will faithfully adapt more of the beloved light novels, the movie is set to delve into entirely new territories within Maomao’s fascinating world. This is fantastic news for the series’ rapidly expanding global fanbase, whose passion has already helped volumes 12 and 13 secure the ‘Best Continuing Series’ award at the prestigious American Manga Awards.
The Apothecary Diaries centers on the brilliant and observant apothecary, Maomao, who, despite her efforts to avoid it, becomes deeply enmeshed in the elaborate political schemes and medical puzzles of the imperial court. Her unflinching curiosity drives her to uncover both ancient secrets and newfound intrigues. Season 2, in particular, expanded on the emotional depth and political landscape, offering deeper insights into Jinshi’s mysterious past and Maomao’s increasing understanding of her own roots.
Akinori Fukesada will return to direct Season 3, guaranteeing the narrative’s signature tone and style remain consistent. Excitingly, Norihiro Naganuma, who directed the first season of The Apothecary Diaries, will take the helm for the highly anticipated original film.
A trailer for the upcoming releases can be found online, offering a glimpse into what’s next for Maomao and the imperial court.
