A significant disruption to cloud services provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday has resulted in widespread outages and service interruptions for hundreds of websites and applications, including popular gaming, entertainment, and financial platforms. Amazon confirmed that its engineers are actively working to mitigate the impact and pinpoint the exact cause of the problem. Currently, 28 AWS services, particularly those in the vital “US-EAST-1” region, are experiencing issues.
Reports from DownDetector, a website that tracks internet outages, indicate that dozens of major platforms, such as Amazon itself, Venmo, Hulu, McDonald’s, and Coinbase, are facing connectivity problems.
Coinbase, a prominent cryptocurrency platform, explicitly attributed its accessibility issues to the AWS outage. In a statement shared on X, the company assured users that, while access is currently unavailable, all funds remain secure, and their team is dedicated to resolving the problem and providing timely updates.
The AI startup Perplexity also confirmed it was affected, with CEO Aravind Srinivas stating, “The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.”
Meredith Whittaker, CEO of the secure messaging app Signal, also took to X to inform users of service interruptions. She noted, “PSA: we are aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.”
