The latest Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger (known for Barbarian and Weapons), is reportedly expanding its cast with the addition of Paul Walter Hauser.
Hauser is expected to join Austin Abrams, who also appeared in Weapons, in the ensemble for the new Resident Evil movie. Reports confirm Hauser’s involvement.
A versatile actor, Hauser recently earned critical acclaim for The Luckiest Man in America, a movie chronicling Michael Larson’s legendary winning streak on the 80s game show Press Your Luck. He’s also recognized for his lead role in the 2019 Clint Eastwood film Richard Jewell, as well as his performances in Cobra Kai, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun, and I, Tonya.
Production for the Resident Evil movie is scheduled to commence this October in Prague, suggesting more casting announcements are imminent.
While the film doesn’t directly adapt existing game storylines, director Cregger, who co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, stated that it ‘lives in the world’ of Resident Evil 2 and 3. However, he also noted that its tone aligns more closely with Resident Evil 4.
“I’ve never seen a movie like it,” Cregger remarked, expressing his immense excitement for the project.
Cregger clarified that he hasn’t seen any of Paul W.S. Anderson’s six prior Resident Evil films and suggested that fans of those movies might not appreciate his vision. Sony Pictures, which distributed the previous billion-dollar-grossing Resident Evil series, is also backing Cregger’s film.
The new Resident Evil movie is slated for release on September 18, 2026. Additionally, Sony Pictures is set to distribute the live-action Zelda movie, scheduled for May 2027.
Meanwhile, in the gaming world, Capcom is preparing to launch Resident Evil 9: Requiem in February 2026, alongside new Resident Evil ports for the Nintendo Switch 2.
