“I really aimed to combine pieces that are quite different from each other,” explained 24-year-old Rachel Lu, when asked about her outfit on a bustling Saturday in mid-August. We spotted her just outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “I just experimented with the jewelry I already had, layering it all up.”
Rachel, who works for Bloomberg, described her chosen ensemble—a bandanna, a well-loved graphic T-shirt, and a flowing patterned skirt—as distinctly a “weekend-night look.”
Chuckling, she added, “I look like I’m ready for a pirate gathering!” In reality, she was headed out on a date with her boyfriend.
A striking element weaving through her entire outfit was the color red. As someone of Chinese heritage, Rachel makes an effort to incorporate it into her wardrobe. “I always try to have at least one red item on me,” she shared. “While other colors are also considered lucky in Chinese culture, red is the one I personally feel most connected to.”
