A man, previously arrested for the racially aggravated sexual assault of an Indian-origin woman in Walsall, has now been formally charged with rape. He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
West Midlands Police identified the accused as John Ashby, a 32-year-old white British man from Stockland Green, with charges officially laid on Tuesday evening.
These charges stem from an attack on a woman in her twenties, locally identified as a Sikh student, which occurred in Walsall on Saturday night.
According to police, Ashby faces additional charges including sexual assault, strangulation, racially aggravated actual bodily harm, and robbery.
The local community previously expressed deep shock following reports of the Indian-origin woman’s racially aggravated rape in Walsall.
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who heads the West Midlands Police Public Protection Unit and is leading this investigation, confirmed that the woman involved has been informed about the charging decision.
He added that she continues to receive support from dedicated, specially-trained officers.
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police assured the community that his team would maintain increased patrols and continued dialogue in the neighborhood, which has been understandably distressed by this attack.
“We recognize the profound fear and concern this incident has created within our communities. Our commitment is to engage continuously with residents, listening to and addressing their worries,” Mr. Dolby stated.
Officers have also been visiting local faith establishments, consulting with community leaders on strategies to enhance women’s safety and foster an environment where women feel more secure.
He emphasized the importance of sustaining these conversations and building upon efforts to ensure comprehensive women’s safety across the community.
Earlier in the week, residents of the usually peaceful Walsall neighborhood had voiced their shock following the weekend’s assault. UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood publicly denounced the incident as a “horrific crime.”
“I understand the apprehension and distress this will cause the local Sikh community,” she remarked. “I have personally sought assurances from both police and community leaders that every possible measure is being taken to support all those affected by this heinous act.”
Police released CCTV footage of the suspect on Sunday, describing him as a white male in his 30s. This came after authorities were alerted to a woman in distress in the Park Hall area of Walsall on Saturday evening. The subsequent arrest of the now-charged individual occurred on Monday.
Disturbingly, this incident follows another racially aggravated sexual assault against a British Sikh woman, also in her 20s, which took place in nearby Oldbury just last month. West Midlands Police confirm that investigation remains ongoing, with no charges yet filed in that separate case.
Preet Kaur Gill, the British Sikh Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, expressed profound concern, stating that “The recurring instances of violence against women in our region, especially when amplified by elements of hate and racial bias, are deeply unsettling.”
