The animated mythological epic, Mahavatar Narsimha, has achieved a monumental success in India, redefining the potential of animation films in the country. With a remarkable worldwide collection of ₹326 crore, the film has not only exceeded its modest budget by eight times but has also outperformed major Bollywood blockbusters.
Box Office Dominance
Produced on a reported budget of ₹40 crore, Mahavatar Narsimha concluded its theatrical run with an impressive ₹250.50 crore net (₹298 crore gross) in India alone. The film garnered significant attention, attracting 1.5 crore footfalls nationwide. Directed by Ashwin Kumar in his directorial debut, the movie was released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. The Hindi version alone contributed ₹188 crore net to the domestic collection, making it the highest-grossing animated film in India, comfortably beating titles like ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’. Internationally, the film added approximately $3 million, pushing its global total to a phenomenal ₹326 crore.
Outshining Bollywood Biggies
Mahavatar Narsimha’s domestic net collection of ₹250 crore surpasses the recent earnings of superstars such as Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Hrithik Roshan. Salman Khan’s ‘Sikandar’ grossed ₹110 crore in India and ₹185 crore globally, while Aamir Khan’s ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ collected ₹167 crore in India and ₹267 crore worldwide. Even Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s pan-India YRF Spy Universe film, ‘War 2’, which earned ₹236 crore in India, falls short of Mahavatar Narsimha’s domestic earnings. While ‘War 2’ slightly edged out Mahavatar Narsimha overseas with $9 million to its worldwide gross of ₹364 crore, the animated feature’s overall performance, especially its budget-friendly success, is a testament to its broad appeal.
Behind the Success
Produced by Kleem Productions and presented by Hombale Films, Mahavatar Narsimha is the first installment in an ambitious seven-part animated cinematic universe based on the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. The film has been lauded for its stunning visuals and resonated strongly with family audiences and young viewers across India, establishing a new benchmark for animated films in the Indian market.
