Chris Mundy, the showrunner for the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, recently offered new insights into the highly anticipated DC Comics adaptation. He describes the show, featuring Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre), as a dynamic blend of a buddy-cop drama and a superhero epic.
The official synopsis reveals that Lanterns will follow John Stewart, a fresh recruit, and the legendary Hal Jordan as they operate as intergalactic police. Their latest assignment pulls them into a profound, Earth-based mystery involving a murder investigation in the heartland of America.
“Our series largely explores the concept of replacement,” Mundy explained in a recent profile on actor Aaron Pierre for Men’s Health. “It asks crucial questions: when is it appropriate for someone to relinquish their position, and when is the right moment for a new individual to assume leadership?”
He elaborated on the dynamic between the two central figures, emphasizing its significance: “The tension and interplay between Hal and John are paramount. A great deal of John’s strength comes from his ability to remain composed, understanding that aggression diminishes one’s authority. We aim to show that he is confident in his place and has no need to overcompensate. This natural balance is something Aaron embodies perfectly. He possesses a powerful physical presence, yet he also radiates a gentle thoughtfulness that is truly unteachable.”

Mundy further noted that Pierre approached the role with a deep sense of responsibility, particularly as a Black actor portraying John Stewart. He ensured a thorough understanding of the character to bring him authentically to life. “I believe fans will recognize and appreciate the reverence he holds for this role, and that truly makes a difference,” Mundy stated.
Pierre himself shared his perspective on John Stewart, describing the character as someone who “radiates strength and fortitude.” He elaborated, “It’s that drive to constantly strive for your best self, which inherently pushes you to take responsibility when you fall short.”
This isn’t Pierre’s first foray into comic book adaptations. He previously appeared in the SyFy series Krypton, and, as confirmed by James Gunn, he was considered for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Earlier in his career, during the tumultuous production history of Marvel’s Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali, Pierre was cast in a role. However, that project and his involvement ultimately dissolved, a turn of events that still causes disappointment for the English actor.
“I recall the excitement of being cast in Blade,” Pierre recounted to Men’s Health. “But a crucial lesson I took from that experience is that true work doesn’t begin until you’re physically on set. The project simply evolved in a different creative direction, and I was no longer included. It’s a reality you learn to accept.”
Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO sometime next year.
