Kolkata is currently facing a flood-like situation due to intense rainfall, with rainwater inundating homes, offices, and streets. Amidst the widespread waterlogging, a viral video has captured widespread attention online: a snake was filmed swimming through a flooded backyard, remarkably carrying a fish in its mouth.
Shared by Instagram user Atreyee Mitra, the video was captioned, “Kolkata and its little perks, right before Durga Pujo.” The footage, filmed from inside a house, shows the snake skillfully navigating the waterlogged area with its catch.
Many viewers identified the snake as a Checkered keelback, commonly known as Jol Dhora. The video quickly sparked a wave of witty and relatable comments on social media, with many drawing parallels to Kolkata’s culinary culture, particularly the fondness for fish.
One user humorously remarked, “Bro proved that he is Bengali,” while another tweeted, “In Kolkata, even snakes want to eat mach bhaat (fish and rice).” Other comments included, “He will be partying today,” and simply, “Kolkata moment,” capturing the often surreal blend of the mundane and the extraordinary experienced in the city.
The heavy downpour has significantly impacted daily life in Kolkata, leading to submerged roads, abandoned vehicles like a Rolls-Royce Ghost, and disruptions for commuters. The waterlogging has also raised concerns as it occurred just days before the major festival of Durga Puja, and sadly, flood-like conditions in the past have resulted in loss of life.
