In a remarkable display of empathy and generosity, a man from eastern China has been widely lauded for his compassionate initiative. Zheng Gang, a 39-year-old from Jinan in Shandong province, has opened a free shelter named the ‘House of Compassion’ to support families of hospital patients who often struggle with the high costs of local accommodation.
Zheng’s inspiration stems from his personal experience. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2020 and spending 45 days in intensive care, he was deeply moved by the sight of patient relatives sleeping on the floor during a subsequent hospital visit. He understood the immense emotional and financial strain these families endure.
Recognizing the significant need, particularly as major hospitals in provincial capitals draw patients from rural areas, Zheng rented a flat in 2022. This modest ‘House of Compassion’ is equipped with bunk beds and can house up to 15 people, offering refuge for days or even months. Beyond lodging, Zheng provides essential supplies like rice and noodles, allowing families to cook their own meals, further easing their burden.
Zheng, who also works as a medical escort, dedicates his afternoons to approaching hospitals, carrying a sign for the ‘House of Compassion’. Over the past four years, his selfless act has provided shelter to more than 300 families, transforming him into a quiet hero whose kindness has deeply resonated across Chinese social media.
