Due to relentless heavy rainfall and powerful winds, authorities in Kerala have implemented critical safety measures. The Idukki District Collector has announced a crucial holiday for all educational establishments, including professional colleges, set for Wednesday, October 22, 2025. However, this directive does not apply to residential institutions where students reside on campus.
This important decision comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, forecasting exceptionally heavy rainfall in Idukki. Predictions suggest more than 204.4 millimeters (mm) of rain on Wednesday. Furthermore, the neighboring districts of Palakkad and Malappuram are also under a red alert for the same day, signaling widespread concern.
Kerala’s Weather Outlook
The IMD’s latest forecast indicates that Kerala will likely experience continued rain and thundershowers through October 26, 2025. Expect thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour (kmph) until October 24.
Coastal areas stretching across Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep, along with adjacent sea regions, are anticipated to face turbulent weather, with wind speeds ranging from 35–45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph. Fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into these potentially dangerous areas during this period for their safety.
