Kenya’s primary airport experienced operational disruptions today as a massive influx of mourners gathered to receive the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The former leader passed away in India yesterday.
Thousands of grieving supporters, many carrying twigs and palm branches, breached security at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) shortly after Odinga’s body arrived this morning. Aviation authorities confirmed a precautionary closure of the airport to allow security teams to regain control and ensure the safety of all present.
In response to the unexpectedly large crowds, the planned public viewing ceremony has been relocated from Parliament to the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi.
Odinga, who was 80 years old, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while on a morning walk in India. He was taken to Devamatha Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His passing has been met with widespread condolences from Kenyan politicians and international leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed Odinga as a “towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.” Kenyan President William Ruto also paid tribute, calling Odinga a “beacon of courage” and the “father of our democracy.” A seven-day mourning period has been declared, and Odinga will be honored with a state funeral and full military honors.
Odinga was a significant figure in Kenyan politics for decades, having served as an opposition leader and contesting five presidential elections, most recently three years ago.
