Kanya Pujan 2025: Your Essential Guide to Ashtami & Navami Rituals (Dos & Don’ts)

September 29, 2025
in Astrology
Reading Time: 5 min

Kanya Pujan, also known as Kumari Puja, stands as one of the most profound rituals celebrated during Navratri. Specifically observed on Ashtami or Navami (falling on September 30 and October 1 in 2025, respectively), this tradition goes far beyond simply offering meals and gifts to young girls. It is a deeply spiritual and symbolic practice that reveres the divine feminine energy, or Shakti, in its most pristine form. To truly embrace the sanctity of this ritual, it’s essential to look past superficial acts and grasp its true spirit, understanding both the proper observances and the common pitfalls to avoid. Whether you’re a devoted spiritual practitioner or looking to infuse your home with meaningful family traditions, this guide offers practical insights for Kanya Pujan.

Why Kanya Pujan Matters

In Hindu custom, nine young girls, typically aged between 2 and 10, are revered as living manifestations of the Navadurga—the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. Occasionally, a tenth child, a boy symbolizing Bhairava, is also included in the ceremony. This beautiful practice of washing their feet, serving them food, seeking their blessings by touching their feet, and treating them with boundless love is more than just a ritual; it’s a poignant reminder to honor the divine power inherent in innocence and gentleness.

For 2025, Ashtami will be observed on Tuesday, September 30th, and Navami on Wednesday, October 1st. Most families choose to perform Kanya Pujan on one of these two sacred days, guided by their family traditions or convenience.

Dos for Kanya Pujan in 2025

1. Select the Auspicious Day

Kanya Pujan can be performed on either Ashtami or Navami, as both days are considered highly sacred. While choosing the day that best fits your schedule, remember to invite the girls with genuine warmth and respect, ensuring they feel welcomed rather than rushed.

2. Extend Respectful Invitations

Ideally, invite nine young girls (or an odd number like five or seven if nine isn’t feasible) who are typically pre-pubescent. It’s thoughtful to inform their parents in advance, and if necessary, offer transportation to ensure their comfort and ease. Remember, this isn’t merely about serving a meal; it’s a profound act of spiritual reverence.

3. Uphold Purity and Cleanliness

Ensure the designated puja area is meticulously clean and free of clutter. If you are observing the tradition of washing their feet, use a separate small plate or bowl with fresh water for each child, and provide individual clean towels. You may also light a diya (lamp) and offer kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice grains), and flowers, accompanied by a quiet Durga mantra or silent prayers.

4. Serve Wholesome Sattvic Food

The customary Navratri meal typically consists of poori, chana (black gram), and halwa. Should there be any dietary considerations, offering fruits or alternative sweets is perfectly acceptable. Ensure the food is:

  • Freshly home-cooked
  • Served with genuine care, ideally avoiding disposable dinnerware
  • Offered with sincere respect, steering clear of extravagance

Never pressure a child to finish their plate. Instead, politely inquire about their preferences.

5. Present Thoughtful Tokens of Appreciation

It’s customary to present a small gift or token of gratitude, such as a modest amount of money, clothing, notebooks, bangles, or toys. The monetary value is secondary; what truly matters is the heartfelt gesture and the positive energy it conveys. If offering money, place it in a clean envelope or wrap it respectfully, avoiding a casual handover.

6. Engage Your Own Children

If you have children, encourage their participation. Let them assist with the puja preparations, serve food, or simply observe the ceremony. This provides a valuable opportunity to instill lessons in humility, gratitude, and devotion.

Don’ts for Kanya Pujan

1. Avoid Rushing or Treating It as a Chore

Performing the ritual hastily, merely out of obligation, or viewing it as a task to simply check off a list, completely undermines its sacred intent. If you cannot approach it with a pure heart and genuine intention, it might be more appropriate to forego it entirely. The sincere energy of devotion far outweighs the act itself.

2. Never Force Participation

Do not pressure children or their parents to participate if they express hesitation. The essence of Kanya Pujan isn’t about the quantity of girls, but the quality of devotion. Even honoring a single girl with true devotion holds immense spiritual significance.

3. Steer Clear of Ostentation or Extravagance

Elaborate gifts, overly grand decorations, or extensive photo opportunities can transform a sacred practice into a mere performance. The true spirit of Navratri thrives on simplicity, sincerity, and quiet reverence.

4. Prevent Food Wastage

Prepare only the amount of food that is genuinely needed. If there happens to be any surplus, share it thoughtfully with neighbors, helpers, or those in need. Wasting prasad (sacred food) is considered highly disrespectful.

5. Always Set a Clear Intention (Sankalpa)

Before commencing the ritual, take a moment to pause and establish a clear sankalpa, or intention. This could be a prayer for your family’s peace and well-being, a personal aspiration, or a pledge to honor the divine feminine energy within yourself. This inner clarity is what truly imbues the external ritual with profound meaning.
