Japan’s political landscape is facing a major shake-up. The leader of the Komeito party, Tetsuo Saito, has declared its withdrawal from the ruling coalition, a partnership long held with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This move stems from growing unease within Komeito regarding corruption allegations.
This recent decision delivers a substantial blow to the Liberal Democrats. Just last week, the LDP had elected ultra-conservative lawmaker Sanae Takaichi as its new leader. While Ms. Takaichi still holds the potential to become Japan’s first female Prime Minister, Komeito’s departure means the Liberal Democrats must now actively search for at least one additional coalition partner to maintain their hold on power.
The ruling coalition was already in a precarious position, having previously lost its majorities in both houses of parliament. With the lower house slated to vote on a new Prime Minister later this month, the urgency for the LDP to secure new alliances is paramount.
