Film distributor MUBI has just unveiled the official trailer and stunning artwork for ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ the newest cinematic offering from acclaimed Iranian director Jafar Panahi. This powerful film, which earned the prestigious Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is particularly significant as it marks Panahi’s return to filmmaking after his release from an Iranian prison two years ago. It has already garnered considerable praise following its recent screening at the BFI London Film Festival.
The narrative of ‘It Was Just an Accident’ unfolds in contemporary Iran, centering on a group of ex-political prisoners who believe they’ve tracked down the guard responsible for their past torture. The tension escalates when Vahid, an auto mechanic among them, captures the man. This act forces the group to grapple with a profound ethical question: do they pursue retribution, or can they find a way to let go of the past?
Panahi, who endured a lengthy 14-year ban from creating films, appearing in media, and traveling, shared with Variety that the film’s genesis came from deep personal introspection. He reflected, “When you spend eight hours a day blindfolded, seated in front of a wall, being interrogated by someone standing behind your back every day, you can’t stop wondering what kind of conversation you can have with this man.”
The compelling cast features Ebrahim Azizi, Vahid Mobasheri, Mariam Afshari, and Hadis Pakbaten.
With its selection as France’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, Panahi’s latest masterpiece is more than just a film; it represents a remarkable creative rebirth and a powerful, defiant reassertion of his artistic voice and personal freedom.
