In 2020, triathlete Sam Suresh Chandy faced a challenge beyond his usual races: finding fellow trekkers for a demanding climb to Agasthyarkoodam, South India’s second-highest peak, right in Thiruvananthapuram. When his immediate circle couldn’t join, he cast a wider net, and to his surprise, 40 enthusiastic individuals stepped forward, eager for the adventure.
This spontaneous gathering blossomed into ITREK, a thriving hiking community boasting 500 members, from active 18-year-olds to seasoned 75-year-olds. Its diverse ranks include professionals like civil servants, corporate leaders, journalists, entrepreneurs, and students. ITREK’s core philosophy is simple yet powerful: ‘Explore outdoors, embrace community.’ Their mission extends beyond adventure, championing sustainable travel, environmental stewardship, and dedicated support for the vital forest-dwelling communities.

“We act as a facilitating engine for anyone passionate about trekking,” explains Sam, a remarkable five-time Ironman triathlon winner known for conquering grueling swimming, running, and cycling challenges. He adds, “Many aspiring trekkers don’t know where to start, lack companions, or simply worry about their physical stamina.”

ITREK’s philosophy is built on three pillars: promoting healthy lifestyles through outdoor exploration, a steadfast commitment to preserving nature, and fostering strong relationships with forest-dependent and tribal communities. This allegiance involves not only ensuring litter-free treks but also extending practical support and acting as a bridge for mutual understanding and idea exchange between city dwellers and forest inhabitants.

“Every trek we undertake includes a contribution to the local community,” Sam shares. “We actively raise funds to assist guides facing health or other challenges, recognizing their integral role as members of indigenous forest communities. They warmly welcome us and speak to us about the forest and their way of life during our brief interactions.”
Adventure for Well-being
Sam emphasizes that the club strongly promotes a healthy lifestyle. He notes that most individuals drawn to trekking already maintain a regular fitness routine.
“Our activities aren’t confined solely to trekking,” Sam reveals. “We also organize invigorating sea-swimming sessions. Thiruvananthapuram, uniquely situated between the majestic Western Ghats and the vast Arabian Sea, offers an incredible opportunity to experience both land and water adventures.”

He stresses that while a certain level of fitness is beneficial, even for elderly participants, those who choose trekking often possess that inherent drive. “During our recent trek to Arippa in Kollam, for example,” Sam recounts, “Veeramoni Sankaranarayana, a retired banker, impressively hiked seven kilometers with us. We ensure support for members of all ages, ready to lend a hand or even assist by carrying them if needed.” He further explains that ITREK has proudly helped many older individuals realize their long-held dream of scaling iconic peaks like Agasthyarkoodam.
On their most recent expedition to Agasthyarkoodam, Sam proudly states that 75 individuals from all corners of the state joined, marking the largest single group ever to conquer the peak. ITREK plans to return to Agasthyarkoodam for another ascent in December 2025.
The ITREK team has an exciting lineup of upcoming adventures. Their first planned trek is to Vazhvanthol waterfalls, a scenic spot 40 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, scheduled for September 21. October promises a thrilling two-day, one-night trek in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, featuring a night jungle scout with opportunities for animal sightings, followed by a full-day hike. Further treks to Munnar and Meesapulimala in Idukki are planned for November.
“Looking ahead to next year, we have ambitious plans for a Himalayan trek,” Sam shares enthusiastically.
