Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a stern warning to a flotilla of over 40 boats attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, urging them to cease their mission. Meloni expressed concern that the initiative, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), could jeopardize a new US-proposed plan aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas war. She described the US proposal as a source of “hope” but cautioned that it relies on a “fragile balance” that could easily be disrupted.
The GSF, carrying over 500 individuals including politicians and climate activist Greta Thunberg, has been accompanied by an Italian naval frigate. However, Italian officials indicated that the frigate would disengage once the flotilla reached a point 150 nautical miles from Gaza’s shore. Upon reaching this designated area, the GSF reported being on “high alert” due to an increase in drone activity.
Meloni stated, “I fear that the flotilla’s attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade could serve as a pretext to do so.” She emphasized that any action jeopardizing the peace process would disproportionately harm the people of Gaza. Israel has reportedly asked the flotilla to deliver its humanitarian aid to an Israeli port instead.
The flotilla’s organizers maintain their commitment to the mission, asserting that external pressures will not deter them. They have prepared for potential interceptions following encounters with unidentified vessels. Italian authorities have previously encouraged the flotilla to divert its course to Cyprus to deliver the aid, aiming to prevent a confrontation with Israel.
The situation highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding aid delivery to Gaza and the delicate efforts to achieve a lasting peace in the region.
