Irish President Michael D. Higgins has been admitted to St. James’s Hospital in Dublin for the examination and treatment of a localized infection. He traveled to the hospital by arrangement on Sunday and has begun a course of antibiotics.
According to an update from his office on Monday, the President’s medical team has observed a significant improvement since the treatment started. Following their advice, President Higgins will remain in the hospital to complete the antibiotic course.
President Higgins is expected to continue his official duties until the inauguration of Catherine Connolly as the new President of Ireland on November 11th.
He recently congratulated his successor on her resounding election victory over the weekend. The independent candidate secured a record number of first preference votes, though a significant number of spoiled ballots were also recorded, prompting calls for discussion on the matter.
