India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is embarking on an ambitious journey to establish 500 AI Data Labs nationwide, announced IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. These labs will be strategically placed across various districts, including the crucial North Eastern regions, fostering widespread AI development. This initiative was highlighted during a preparatory event for the upcoming AI Impact Summit, which India is set to host in February 2026. Minister Vaishnaw also mentioned that a comprehensive AI Governance Framework, building on an initial draft from earlier this year, is expected to be unveiled very soon.
Further boosting the nation’s AI landscape, the IT Ministry has approved eight new projects for support under the IndiaAI Mission. These projects join four previously selected startups that benefit from a shared, subsidized computing facility offering powerful Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
Among the newly approved initiatives, an IIT Bombay consortium named BombayGen stands out. It plans to develop a robust suite of foundational large language models (LLMs) tailored for Indian languages, boasting over 1 trillion parameters. This groundbreaking project will receive ₹988.6 crore in funding. Additionally, healthcare firm Fractal Analytics Ltd. will gain GPU access to train advanced reasoning LLMs, aiming to enhance medical applications. Other notable beneficiaries include Tech Mahindra, and innovative startups such as ZenteeIQ, Genloop, and NeuroDX.
Upcoming AI Impact Summit: A Vision for India’s AI Future
The highly anticipated AI Impact Summit will bring together influential industry leaders and heads of government from around the world. While specific details about the attendees will be revealed closer to the event, Minister Vaishnaw expressed the government’s aspiration to unveil a foundational LLM by the time the summit commences. This ambitious goal involves training an LLM from the ground up, specifically designed to address Indian linguistic and contextual needs, a challenging but pivotal step towards establishing India’s self-reliance in cutting-edge AI technology.
