Indian Student Fighting for Russia Captured by Ukrainian Forces

An Indian national, Sahil Majothi, 22, from Gujarat, has reportedly been captured by Ukrainian forces while allegedly fighting for Russia. This marks the first known instance of an Indian citizen being detained in the ongoing conflict.

Majothi, who was pursuing computer engineering in Russia, was allegedly implicated in a drug case in April, according to his mother, Hasina Majothi. She states that he subsequently joined the Russian army to evade a seven-year prison sentence, a claim supported by a video released by the Ukrainian army. Indian officials are currently investigating the situation and have not yet received formal communication from Ukraine.

Mrs. Majothi shared that her son arrived in Russia in January 2024, completing a language course before starting his studies in Moscow. She alleges he was framed in a drug-related incident while working part-time. She only learned of his involvement in the conflict through a widely shared video of him speaking.

In the video, Majothi claims he was given a choice between military service or imprisonment, with promises of pay and a one-year term. He states he never received any payment and was sent to the battlefield after a brief training period. He also described an altercation with his commander, leading him to seek help from Ukrainian forces.

The BBC is working to independently verify the details of Majothi’s claims and the circumstances surrounding his alleged capture.

Majothi’s situation highlights growing concerns about Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian military. Reports suggest over 150 Indians have enlisted, with tragic consequences for some. The Indian government has repeatedly advised its citizens to avoid such engagements, emphasizing the significant risks involved.

The Indian Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has questioned Majothi’s family, confirming his arrest in Russia. Local community leaders are appealing to the government for his safe return.
