In a significant legal development, Indian-origin judge Arun Subramanian sentenced rap mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to 50 months in prison. The sentence was imposed on October 3rd for prostitution-related convictions. Judge Subramanian acknowledged Combs’ notable music career but stressed that his history of sexual violence necessitated a substantial punishment. Combs was found guilty of facilitating sexual encounters by transporting individuals across the United States, activities he reportedly referred to as ‘freak-offs.’
During the sentencing, Judge Subramanian stated that the punishment was crucial “to send a message to abusers and victims alike that exploitation and violence against women is met with real accountability.” This statement, as reported by The New York Times, underscores the judge’s intent to address systemic issues through this case.
Combs’ defense team had argued that the sex acts were consensual, positioning him as merely a ‘john.’ However, the judge directly refuted this, telling Combs, ‘You were no john.’ He further elaborated that even if Combs’ ‘currency’ was sexual gratification rather than money, the coercion involved was equally, if not more, damaging.
The judge also highlighted how Combs allegedly used his fame and power to ‘subjugate’ his victims. While Combs reportedly remained impassive initially, he later appeared to apologize to friends and family in the courtroom. Judge Subramanian concluded by acknowledging Combs’ current difficult situation but reiterated the seriousness of his crimes and the profound impact of his actions on the women involved.
In addition to the 50-month jail term, Combs was also fined $500,000. This sentence equates to four years and two months, with the possibility of an earlier release due to time already served, as reports suggest he has spent 12 months in jail.
