Imtiaz Ali on “Amar Singh Chamkila” Emmy Nods: Forever Indebted to Punjab

Director Imtiaz Ali is overwhelmed with happiness as his film Amar Singh Chamkila continues to receive accolades. The movie has earned multiple nominations at the prestigious International Emmy Awards, with Diljit Dosanjh nominated for Best Performance by an Actor and the film itself for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series. Ali shared his excitement exclusively with HT City, highlighting the significance of these nominations.

“Chamkila,” Ali noted, represents a life story rich with the highs and lows of a difficult era in Punjab. He sees Chamkila and Amarjot (played by Parineeti Chopra) as symbols of Punjab’s complexities, embodying the very essence of the land they came from. “As true children of that land, they lived the story of the land,” Ali stated.

He also extended his heartfelt thanks to Netflix for their crucial support, especially during a period when he faced financial challenges with the project. “They came in at a time when we were facing difficulties and put their money into the project. It’s because of them that the film happened,” he said.

Praising his lead actor, Imtiaz Ali remarked, “The film couldn’t have been made without Diljit Dosanjh. He has brought in a lot of value and made the film what it is. I am so glad that he is also nominated in the category of Best Actor.” He expressed gratitude on behalf of the entire team, including AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil, Parineeti Chopra, and all the crew members, acknowledging their beautiful contribution to Amar Singh Chamkila. Ali concluded by emphasizing his deep connection to Punjab: “I am forever indebted to Punjab and its people for letting me be there and participate in their stories.” He also gave special credit to his brother Sajid Ali for co-writing the film, Jassi for research support, and his editor Aarti for her vital input.
