In a move that has drawn renewed attention to a cultural icon, Colorado officials are re-examining the death of legendary journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson. The review comes two decades after his passing, which was officially classified as a suicide. This re-evaluation is being undertaken at the behest of Thompson’s family, although authorities have clarified that no new evidence of foul play has emerged in the case.
Thompson, renowned for his unique brand of “gonzo journalism” and his seminal work “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” died in February 2005 at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, at the age of 67. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation confirmed they are conducting a “case review” of the initial 2005 investigation.
Sheriff Michael Buglione, commenting on the review, stated, “By bringing in an outside agency for a fresh look, we hope to provide a definitive and transparent review that may offer peace of mind to his family and the public.” He further acknowledged Thompson’s significant influence on his community and beyond.
Thompson was a prolific writer, contributing to numerous publications including Rolling Stone, Playboy, and ESPN. His 1971 novel, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” a semi-autobiographical account of the 1960s counterculture, was famously adapted into a film starring Johnny Depp. Other notable works include “Hell’s Angels” and “Generation of Swine.”
Officials have indicated that there is no set timeline for the current investigation and that updates will be provided upon its completion. Reports from the time of his death state that Thompson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while speaking with his wife on the phone. His son discovered the scene. The original investigation found no evidence of foul play.
