Extraction-style games are incredibly popular right now, with titles like Arc Raiders leading the charge. However, Enginefall offers a fresh take on the genre: instead of vast, dilapidated landscapes, it throws dozens of players onto a massive, moving train. This unique setting creates a thrilling dynamic compared to traditional arena-based rivals. A major Steam playtest is currently live for the entire weekend, and you can jump in and play for free immediately!
While many games feature exciting train sequences – like that iconic Uncharted 2 mission or the Gears of War finale – Enginefall elevates the concept to an entire game. Players form teams of up to five, aiming to survive, craft, and fight their way to the front of a colossal train. The ultimate goal is to become the driver and seize control. Beyond being loaded with valuable loot and resources to scavenge and escape with, this train is also under siege by up to 85 other players simultaneously.
Though it appears to challenge top-tier FPS titles in the extraction genre, Enginefall leans more towards the survival elements seen in games like Rust, rather than the hardcore realism of Escape From Tarkov. Intense gun battles are a given, but crafting and base-building are equally vital. The game heavily emphasizes proximity chat, leading to both hilarious chaos and tense moments where alliances can be forged or spectacularly broken.
Beyond fighting your way to the front of the main train, you can also construct your very own “Marauder” train. This allows you to recruit other players to join your crew and defend your mobile fortress from potential raiders. However, maintaining control isn’t simple; your passengers might stage a mutiny if their needs aren’t met, making the role of conductor a demanding one.
Beginning October 24, Enginefall is hosting a new playtest where you’ll get to raid a massive “Titan” train. True to its name, this colossal train is brimming with fantastic gear, but acquiring the best loot will challenge your endurance. Players will join servers that run for an epic five hours – though you can always perform a successful extraction before the marathon raid concludes.
For the first time ever, this playtest introduces the ability for Enginefall players to progress and upgrade their Dagger Shuttle, a smaller train that serves as a customizable mobile home base.
The Enginefall playtest is happening now and wraps up on Sunday, October 26. It’s completely free to join, but you’ll need to apply for access through its Steam page.
